The term branding has been around and being in usage for decades. The word brand has broadened since its inception or when the word first came out. The word Brand was derived from the word “Brandr” an Ancient Norse word which means “to burn”. In the year 950 A.D. “brand” was referred to the burning of a piece of wood.
In the 1300s, it was used to describe a torch, basically which meant a burning piece of wood that was used as an instrument. By the 1500s, its meaning has changed from a burning wood to a mark burned on cattle to show ownership. As at that time individual ranches had their own unique mark to determine ownership whenever their animals got lost, stolen or mixed with other animals from different ranch. Each brand was simple and easy to identify, which are vital traits that are still common with modern logos and brand.
The year 1820 saw the growth of mass production and shipment of trade goods. As products like wine and ale began to be in bigger batches and had wider distribution, manufacturers began to place their on the crates and also the cases of goods to differentiate themselves from other competition. In due course, the brand advanced into a symbol of quality rather than that of ownership. As at that time, products that were seen as high and consistent quality commanded a higher price than their undistinguished substitute. When it got to the year 1870, it became a necessity to register a trademark to prevent competitors from creating perplexing similar products.
Branding as the name implies is certainly not a light word or topic. There have been several publications concerning the term. But to put in simple terms, a brand could be an organization, product or service with a ‘personality’ that is being shaped by the view of the audience. In other words, it should be said that a designer cannot make a brand, only the customers or audience can make this. The design or the designer only creates or forms the foundation of the brand. Most people have this believe that a brand consists of some elements like colors, fonts, logo, music or even a slogan. But in the real sense of it and in reality, it is much more complicated than that. A brand is like a ‘corporate image’. The main idea and fundamental concept behind having a corporate image is solely dependent on what the company does, everything it owns and produces, and also it should reflect the objectives and values of the business as a whole. It is the consistency and drive of this core objective or idea and what it stands for that makes the company a ‘brand’.
Logo is used for identification as it is commonly or mostly defined. It identifies a product or a company via the use of flag, mark, symbol or even a signature. A logo does advertise the company nor sell it directly neither does it describe the company or the product of the company. A logo derives its meaning from the quality of what it symbolizes and not the other way round. In other words, what a logo means is more important than what it looks like. Just the way we preferred to be called our names- Sam, Wale, Wilson with different personalities, in the same way the logo does not describe what the business does but rather makes it easy to identify and recognizable when seen.
